Visually impaired is a term that is used to describe people who have some form of visual impairment. This includes those who are blind, those with low vision, and those with partial sight. In this article, we will share with you the causes of visual impairment, how do blind people go about their life and how to help overcome their challenges.
What Causes Visual Impairment?
Visual impairment is a condition that affects the eyesight of a person. It can be caused by various factors, some of which are genetic and others environmental. Many with visual impairment have other physical disabilities too. For example, people who are blind may also have hearing impairments or use wheelchairs for mobility. Many people inherit a genetic condition that results in blindness, or other vision problems, such as nearsightedness. Other causes include cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Complications during pregnancy may result in premature births or babies with birth defects such as microphthalmia (an eye too small) and anophthalmia (no eye).Cataracts are a condition where the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy and may need to be surgically removed. Glaucoma is a sickness where fluid builds up in the eyes, damaging the optic nerve. People with macular degeneration have some of their retina cells die or become damaged over time. This can result in blind spots in their field of vision and/or distorted images.
How do Blind People Navigate and Orientate Themselves in Real Time?
The orientation and navigation process for blind people varies from that of sighted people. Those with sight use visual information to orient themselves whereas blind people rely on their senses of hearing, touch, and smell. They navigate with the help of a cane or guide dog. The cane provides tactile feedback to the user about objects in their surroundings. It also helps in detecting changes in terrain such as bumps or slopes. This allows the person to know when they are nearing an obstacle or drop off so that they can change course accordingly. The guide dog provides auditory feedback by barking when it detects something ahead, such as a curb, trash can, or another animal.
The sense of smell is also very important for orientation purposes because it tells a blind person what direction they are facing without having to rely on sight. This is especially true when the ground is not level, as one side will smell fresher than the other.
How To Help the Visually Impaired?
The visually impaired population is a community that is often overlooked. This population, who may be blind or have low vision, face many challenges in their day-to-day lives. It’s important to understand the needs of this population and how you can help them.
There are many ways that you can help the the community. One way is to donate to organizations that provide services to this population. Another way is by volunteering your time with organizations or charities like iC2 Prephouse’s visually impaired charities that offer services for this group. If you want to get involved in a more hands on way, you could also get a certification from an organization and train as an orientation and mobility instructor. Some organization provides information, training, and support to individuals and organizations on all aspects of employment-related matters encountered by the blinds or visually impaired. Examples include: employment assistance, job development and placement and job coaching.
Why is Visually Impaired Awareness Important?
Visual impairment can happen to anyone at any time due to a variety of reasons. It may be genetic, or it may be caused by an accident or injury. There are many different types of visual impairment, but they all have the same consequence: a reduced ability to see and interpret their surroundings.Visually impaired awareness day is important because it increases awareness for those who are visually impaired and helps them feel more included in their communities.
